Making good music, choir write-up
I thought that it'll be cool for the choir to see the write-up that was done for the SAJC concert programme booklet by Yan Peng and I. In a way, it sums up the aspirations of the choir and remind us all of what we set out to be. So here goes:
Making good music: what else can a choir do? No matter the size of the choir, good music transcends all: time and languages, cultures and styles.
River Valley Chamber Singers (RVCS) aims to do just that. Conducted by Ms Jennifer Tham and consisting of just the first batch of IP year5 students, the choir has been making good music together for ten months now.
Despite having a total number of only 27 singers, RVCS is still able to produce sounds that will amaze. This is because every single member in the choir is an independent singer who, when put together, creates fantastic, youthful group dynamics and beautiful harmonies.
As a young choir, RVCS has not had any chance to showcase our voices yet. In tonight’s virgin performance, we present As Torrents in Summer by Edward Elgar and Norvég Leányok by Zoltán Kodály as depictions of rain; Ubi Caritas by Imant Raminsh and Cantemus by Ilne Arne as expressions of love.
As Torrents in Summer is a soulful number with rich imagery to match while Norvég Leányok is a Hungarian song filled with the drips of rain backgrounding the simple story of love. Then we sing of the love and charity of God in Latin in a prayer for joy and round off our repetoire with Cantemus, a clear representation of how much we absolutely love singing and how much joy we derive from singing.
RVCS also cherishes the chance to sing Immortal Bach together with SAJC choir and sincerely thanks them and Ms Tham for this wonderous oppotunity to make and share good music.

tough journey, but we'll make it
Hello there, this blog was set up with the intent of capturing our growth as a chamber choir since we are the first batch of JC singers. Any reflections, pictures, videos, or music comes here! :D WE WILL HAVE FUN PHOTOS FROM SENTOSA SOON!!! :D
"Will we remain as a chamber choir in the future when RVHS (JC) section grows?"
I asked Ms Tham on 3rd April through the phone. Ms Tham replied that she likes the idea of a small choir, and that a chamber choir can have a total of 40 singers. So our name remains. It's pretty cool anyway; our acronym RVCS can mean RVChorale (Seniors) as well.
The upcoming weeks will be very busy for all of us, with EC and MA lecture tests PLUS the very important events (see right) coming up. Our Sentosa outing will be a breather for all of us yeah!
Study hard for the tests but don't neglect choir music! Take them out and practise for a few minutes every day (with details) for de-stress purposes! :D
I really wish that RVCS will grow to be more united and make good music together as we grow. So let us put our hearts and voices together to create a solid foundation for our juniors okay! No doubt the journey will be tough, but I have faith that we will make it.
RVCS, ALL THE WAY!
